National Grilling Month

We’re well into summer, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate National Grilling Month this July by hosting a barbecue. But before you heat up the grill, the National Fire Protection Association has a few safety tips to help you and your policyholders avoid experiencing one of the 8,800 home fires caused by grilling on average each year.

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

Burning Yard Debris

In spring, people do a lot of yard work that often includes burning leaves and yard debris. There are many factors to consider before burning any debris.

The Ellerslie Volunteer Fire Department urges you to adhere to the following tips to protect property and prevent wildfires:

  • Consider alternatives to burning. Some yard debris, such as leaves and grass, may be more valuable if composted.
  • Check with your county fire marshal’s office for local laws on burning debris. Some communities allow burning only during specified hours; others forbid it entirely.
  • Make sure you have an approved burning permit http://www.gatrees.org/online-permits/index.cfm Georgia Forestry Commission’s (Burn Permits): 877-OK2-BURN
  • Check the weather. Don’t burn if conditions are dry or windy.
  • Only burn natural vegetation from your property. Burning household trash or any other man-made materials is illegal. Trash should be hauled away to a convenience center
  • Plan burning for the late afternoon when conditions are typically less windy and more humid.
  • If you must burn, be prepared. Use a shovel or hoe to clear a perimeter around the area where you plan to burn.
  • Keep fire tools ready. To control the fire, you will need a hose, bucket, a steel rake and a shovel for tossing dirt on the fire.
  • Never use flammable liquids such as kerosene, gasoline or diesel fuel to speed burning.
  • Stay with your fire until it is completely out.

The EVFD exists to serve the citizens within our district, but our ability to serve depends upon the amount of support we receive from the community. The EVFD relies on the annual dues contribution of each family and business within our district to cover all operating expenses. This contribution is a tax deductible donation.

Ellerslie is a rapidly growing community and the EVFD does more than just fight an occasional fire. The EVFD provides local emergency assistance by:

  • Removing downed trees after storms to clear roadways
  • Assisting with clearing auto accidents from roadways
  • Directing traffic at accident sites
  • Responding with ambulance services to assist with First-Aid and CPR
  • Aiding search parties to find missing persons.
